Today Johannesburg is in the frame as it presents the fourth FNB Joburg Art Fair. The annual art fest is usually scheduled from April but from this year onwards it will take place in September.

There are 23 galleries to explore, featuring contemporary African art by established and new artists from South Africa and the rest of the continent.

This year sees another first: the first FNB Art Prize. Nominations have flooded in from participating galleries, before being whittled down to a final three: Athi-Patra Ruga, Cedric Nunn and Nirveda Alleck. The trio's works will all be displayed at the fair – but only one will win the R100,000 cash prize.

Exhibitions include 20 Fine Years, showcasing the work of 20 artists from The Bag Factory and Artist Proof Studio; Transitions Multiples by Paul Emmanuel, exploring masculine identity in post-colonial society; and 20 finalists of the inaugural Sovereign African Art Prize.

Other highlights of the weekend include a talk by London's Tate Modern director Chris Dercon entitled Audiences: How Much Do We Really Care?

FNB Joburg Art Fair takes place on the entrance level of the Sandton Convention Centre from September 23-25. For more visit www.fnbjoburgartfair.co.za.
