Kenyan electropop trio Just A Band are known for being somewhat odd, but that's the way they like it – as we discovered in our interview with them back in issue 8. And their latest art-house video offering shows nothing has changed.
The eerie, Japanese-style black-and-white video from Nyoyo Na Uji Films (pictured above) was shot for the band's single Away.
The single is, in turn, one of the tracks on BLNRB – Welcome to the Madhouse, an album that grew out of the BLNRB-NRBLN project, bringing together electronic musicians in Berlin and Nairobi.
Just a Band were one of the Kenyan groups involved in the project, other artists included Mister Abbas, Kimya, Lon'Jon, Nazizi, Michel Ongaro and Ukoo Flani – and from Berlin; Modeselektor, Gebrüder, Teichmann and Jahcoozi.
They all lived, worked and jammed in the Madhouse, a Nairobi townhouse fitted out with two studios. Out of this hotbed of creativity and cross-cultural pollination came 18 original recordings, which are gathered on the album.
