Synchronicity II is the latest exhibition at London's newest African gallery, Tiwani Contemporary.
The exhibition, curated by international collective On The Roof and La Galerie Baudoin Lebon in Paris, features the works of nine contemporary artists from Africa and the diaspora, and will be the first London showcase for many of those participating.
The nine artists are: Madagascar-born Malala Andrialavidrazana; Martiniquian Steeve Bauras; James Barnor, with photographic archives of post-independence Ghana; French-Ivoirian François-Xavier Gbré; Em’Kal from Cameroon; UK/Kenya video artist Grace Ndiritu; Nigerian photographer Abraham Oghobase, Algerian Amina Menia; and Kapwani Kiwanga, presenting Tongue, a sound piece documenting a Swahili lesson between a brother and a sister.
The works were chosen to fit into the theme of synchronicity and the idea that "a version of facts in one place also has its principle of equivalence on the other side of the planet".
Tiwani Contemporary officially launched in December with a multi-media exhibition of work from established and emerging Nigerian artists. The Tiwani team comprises directors Ayo Adeyinka, Jude Cesar and Maria Varnava, who said: "I am very excited to be part of an African-lead initiative that creates a space with a curatorial programme coming directly from the continent."
The curatorial programme is being led by Bisi Silva, cultural advisor to the gallery and founder of the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos, featured in issue 13 of ARISE magazine.
Synchronicity II is at Tiwani Contemporary in London from February 3 to March 17. For more information visit www.tiwani.co.uk.
